Kidd possibly off to Dallas?

Damn you Devean George and your early bird rights! Since George is in his 2nd year with the Mavericks while on his 2nd contract, he’s got early bird rights. Early bird rights enable George to veto a trade, and why not, because if he’s traded, he’d have to relinquish those rights. So no trade for now!

Here’s my original story:

Personally, I’m a bit disappointed. Being a Cavs fan I really would’ve loved to see Jason Kidd playing backcourt with Larry Hughes and Lebron James. But I guess you can’t win ‘em all!

Anyways, here’s the shimmy:

Dallas gets:

 • Jason Kidd
 • Malik Allen

New Jersey gets:

 • Devin Harris
 • Jerry Stackhouse
 • DeSagana Diop
 • Devean George
 • Maurice Ager

Short-term winner = Dallas. Long-term winner = New Jersey. Ok, so the Mavericks are definitely giving up some long-term potential in Devin Harris, and they’re also giving up a stellar bench player in Jerry Stackhouse. Diop, George, and Ager all have expiring contracts so it’s going to be up to the Nets to decide what they want to do with them — but we’ll talk about the Nets later; let’s focus on the Mavericks. This is the Maverick’s push for power in the western conference. First Gasol to L.A., Shaq to Phoenix, now Kidd to Dallas. It’s part of the domino effect as well as a win-win trade. It’s a win-win trade that will affect the Mavericks in the short-term to help push them back to the finals. Kidd will fit very nicely into the point guard spot in Dallas. I forsee something to the effect of:

 • PG: Jason Kidd
 • SG: Jason Terry
 • SF: Josh Howard
 • PF: Dirk Nowitzki
 • C: Eric Dampier

This is, of course, assuming that everyone in Dallas is healthy. So, again, a win-win trade for both sides. Let’s take a look at the Nets:

 • PG: Devin Harris
 • SG: Vince Carter
 • SF: Richard Jefferson
 • PF: Josh Boone
 • C: Nenad Krstic / DeSagana Diop

So it’s pretty obvious that the Nets are going to be lacking the firepower they had when Kidd was playing. But this is a one of those “hey, we need to rebuild” trades — and I can’t say it’s a bad idea, either. I personally didn’t see the Nets going very deep into the playoffs with their big 3 (Kidd, Carter, Jefferson). They got a nice chunk of players to choose from and decide who’s going to fit with the future of the Nets. I would have liked to see the Nets get Josh Howard thrown in there somehow. Perhaps a first-round draft pick and Richard Jefferson would have swayed Dallas?

So, in summary I think it’s a win-win! Short-term for the Mavs, long-term for the Nets.
